Hyperlinks

  • A hyperlink is a connection from one page to another destination
    • another page (bconcept.htm, http://home.ied.edu.hk/~pschen/setup.htm)
    • a different location on the same page (Bookmark)
    • an email address, a file or program
  • A hyperlink can be text or a picture
  • A text hyperlink is simply text, such as a word or phrase, that has been assigned a destination URL
  • A picture hyperlink is a picture that has been assigned a destination URL
    • the entire picture can be assigned a default hyperlink (Button)
    • the picture can be assigned one or more hotspots, which are hyperlink regions on the picture (Image maps)
  • Create a hyperlink
    • highlight a word or phrase, under Insert menu, click Hyperlink, type in file name or email address to be linked
    • select image, under Insert menu, click Hyperlink, type in file name to be lined

Ways to use hyperlinks

  • Navigation bar

    • provide a way for them to navigate to the other pages in your web site

    • text or image type

  • Bookmarks

    • a bookmark is a location or set of characters that you have marked on a page

    • use a bookmark as a destination of a hyperlink

    • use bookmarks to create a table of contents for a long page

    • create a bookmark

      • position the insertion point where you want to create a bookmark

      • type the name of the bookmark

    • create a hyperlink to a bookmark

      • same as create a hyperlink, but in the bookmark box, click the bookmark you want to use as the destination

  • Image maps

    • add hotspots to graphics

    • hotspots can be shaped as rectangles, circles, or polygons

    • a hotspot is an invisible region on a graphic

    • assigned a hyperlink to each hotspot

    • clicks a hotspot, a corresponding destination of the hyperlink is displayed in the web browser

    • add a hotspot to a graphic

      • click the image

      • In the pictures toolbar, select different hotspot shapes to draw

      • add hyperlink to the hotspot
